[Short Film] Fried Again! Shrimp-Man

Logline

A popular lunchbox shop in Taipei becomes the battleground for “Shrimp-Man”, a tiny food creature born from tainted cooking oil, who sets out to save other food folk before they are fried again and doomed to a second, deadly trip into the fryer.

Synopsis

In a bento shop in Taipei famous for its shrimp rolls, crowds flock in every day thanks to its illicit gutter oil, used to enhance flavor. However, this oil causes fried foods to mutate into tiny living beings, which are unknowingly consumed by customers as they enjoy their meals.

To conceal the truth, the shop owner always throws any discovered “little beings” back into the fryer for a second deep-fry, restoring everything to normal.

One day, a being known as “Shrimp-Man” appears. In secret, he rescues these tiny creatures who are on the verge of being re-fried, attempting to help them escape this cruel system hidden beneath irresistible deliciousness.

As the owner notices the growing number of these small beings, he falls into panic and resolves to capture the Shrimp-Man at any cost in order to preserve the shop’s perfect façade.

During one pursuit, Shrimp-Man’s shrimp head is torn apart, nearly resulting in his re-frying. Meanwhile, the captured little beings are being collected in large numbers and sent back into the oil.

Should he jump into the boiling fryer to save the others, or prioritize his own survival? Shrimp-Man makes his decision—and leaps in.

Visual Development

Director’s notes

Shrimp-Man is an original character IP that I have been creating and developing since childhood. Over the years, the character has accompanied me through notebook doodles, diary entries, and different stages of life, gradually evolving into a world that is absurd, humorous, and rooted in everyday emotions.

When I left home for Europe at 22, I packed what many Taiwanese exchange students considered essentials: a rice cooker, curry roux, and instant noodles. Five years later, after moving abroad again, I brought the same foods as gifts for foreign friends. The first thing they did was turn the packages over and examine the ingredient lists. Curious, I looked them up myself and discovered that my nostalgia was mixed with additives I could barely pronounce. Even the instant noodles that had comforted me during difficult times had once been connected to Taiwan’s gutter oil scandal.

We live in an age of food safety anxieties. Most of us know very little about what we actually consume, and public outrage over food scandals often disappears as quickly as it arrives. This led me to wonder: if the food scraps created by unethical factories and discarded without a second thought suddenly gained life and consciousness, how would they view the world that created them?

This film is a deeply personal story. Shrimp-Man is not a conventional hero. He is a cynical little old man with a soft heart, born from gutter oil and deep-fried into existence. His journey—from looking out only for himself to learning to care for others—mirrors my own understanding of life. As I grew older and started a family, I became more aware of the people and issues around me, and more open to the kindness and support that connect us to one another.

In a world where attention is increasingly scarce, I believe that a minimalist visual style and short-form storytelling can make meaningful stories more accessible. Through the warmth of hand-drawn 2D animation and a world seen through the eyes of overlooked little characters, I hope audiences will find humor, empathy, and perhaps a reflection of themselves.
